Overview

This case study demonstrates how I integrated AI-powered tools throughout the UX process—from early ideation to final execution—to work more efficiently, deliver better outcomes, and show fluency in modern product design practices.

Challenge

Too often, cherished family stories are lost with time, especially when older relatives face barriers to recording or documenting their experiences. Traditional journaling and voice recording apps are not designed for elders or legacy archiving. I set out to create a simple, emotionally resonant product that uses AI to capture and preserve these memories, without requiring technical skill or effort from the storyteller.

Ideation & Persona Development

I utilized ChatGPT and UX Pilot to investigate user needs, identify accessibility constraints, and create personas that represent three generational user types: an aging grandparent, an adult caregiver, and a tech-savvy grandchild. This approach allowed for quicker iterations during the early stages of concept development. For example, I used the prompt: “Generate personas for an app that helps families record voice memories from their elderly relatives.”

Journey Mapping & Story Flow Design

I worked with ChatGPT and UIzard to create a comprehensive user journey that spans onboarding, archiving, and sharing stories. This process involved brainstorming supportive microinteractions for seniors and developing tone-sensitive onboarding flows designed to gently encourage participation. For example, we crafted a prompt: “Design a step-by-step journey for an elderly user recording their first memory using a mobile app.”

Wireframe and Layout Generation

UIzard accelerated low- and mid-fidelity wireframe generation based on natural language prompts and hand-drawn layout references. This allowed me to quickly test multiple layout directions for key screens, including: “Record a Story,” “Review & Edit Transcript,” and “Story Archive.”

Final Execution

The high-fidelity design system and responsive interface were created using Figma. I refined each screen to enhance user-friendliness and make the experience more personal. To achieve this, I adjusted some layouts that differed from the medium-fidelity wireframes, focusing the app more on individual experiences.

While ChatGPT assisted in generating UI text, validation messages, and content variants, I rewrote them to ensure they sounded more human and emotionally resonant. Additionally, I created a more familiar and approachable UI with a clean hierarchy.


Why This Project Matters

As AI begins to shift the design landscape, this project demonstrates what’s now possible for solo designers:

While Kindred was never built, the process behind it reflects how quickly UX professionals can turn a human insight into a shareable, high-fidelity solution with minimal overhead.
